“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato

Music is liberating, gives our thoughts a lyrical form and relieves us from the shackles of the hustle-bustle of the city life. We should thank all the musicians for giving us such soulful tracks – and one such musician was born on September 8, 1933. And there’s no point in guessing this name right – yes, we are taking about none other than Asha Bhosle.

She has turned 84 today and Bollywood’s legendary singer has been singing in the industry for nearly seventy decades. If you are into music, you might agree with me on this point that back then – musical setting of any song was so beautiful that it would get stuck to your head for long and we still sing those old melodies.

In an interview with a leading daily, Asha was asked about how music has changed over the years. She had said, “The earlier songs had a lot of meaning. Lyrics made sense. Tunes had more melody. They were composed from the heart. Now the brain composes songs. Computers do the job which artists did. The songs are more technically perfect because they have been created by the mind, but they have no heart in it. The soul has gone. Older songs are classics and live on forever. Today’s songs come with an expiration date.”

From the dhinchank numbers to soulful melodies, her efforts in the genre of music have always been appreciated. She has lent her voice to celebs from Zeenat Aman to Rekha to Vidya Balan. Asha is one versatile singer and well, she also holds the Guinness Book of World Records for being the most recorded artist in the history of music. She was also honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.

Having given voice to such evergreen hits as Aaie Meherbaan, Dil Cheez Kya Hai, Piya Tu, Dum Maro Dum and Rangeela, Ashaji will always be one musical sensation that will remembered for ages.

On the occasion of her 84th birthday, we thought to take a look at some of her top songs:
